Fire Restrictions Lifted in Southeast New Mexico

Posted:

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The state Forestry Division is lifting restrictions on smoking, fireworks, campfires and open fires in 20 of New Mexico's 33 counties.

The ban was imposed May 13th because of dry weather and high fire danger.

The order will be lifted Monday at 8 a.m.

Restrictions were imposed on non-municipal, nonfederal and non-tribal lands in Catron, Chaves, Curry, DeBaca, Dona Ana, Eddy, Grant, Guadalupe, Harding, Hidalgo, Lea, Lincoln, Luna, Mora, Otero, Quay, Roosevelt, San Miguel, Sierra and Socorro counties.

Lincoln National Forest officials also plan to lift Stage 2 restrictions Monday, but fireworks are banned in the forest.

State Forester Arthur "Butch" Blazer said consistent rainfall and higher humidity across New Mexico has lessened fire danger. He still urges the public to be extremely cautious with fire.
