Fort Hood officer family not surprised at her heroics

Associated Press - November 6, 2009 2:05 PM ET

CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. (AP) - The stepmother of the police officer who shot an Army psychiatrist suspected of opening fire on fellow soldiers says the heroics are not surprising.

Wanda Barbour told The Star-News of Wilmington that she knew Sgt. Kimberly Munley was involved when she heard a female officer at Fort Hood had wounded Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan.

Officials say 34-year-old Munley, who was wounded, ended the crisis. She was recovering today in stable condition from gunfire that left 13 dead and 30 hurt.

Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said Munley and her partner responded within three minutes of reported gunfire yesterday. Cone says Munley shot the gunman several times despite being shot herself.

Munley is the daughter of Dennis Barbour, a former mayor of Carolina Beach, N.C. The coastal town is located about 15 miles south of Wilmington.

Wanda Barbour told the newspaper she and her husband are heading to Texas.
