LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Residents living near a low-level radioactive waste burial ground in West Texas will soon be asked to complete a health survey.
The University of North Texas has been commissioned by state environmental and health officials to assess about 24,000 people who live within a 35-mile radius of Waste Control Specialists LLC's nuclear dump site in Andrews County near the New Mexico border.
University spokeswoman Leslie Wimmer said letters encouraging residents to participate will go out in the next few days.
The survey, which was part of legislation passed in 2003 but won't be made public, will provide a baseline assessment before material is buried for the first time at the site later this year.
A Waste Control spokesman said he was unaware of the survey and couldn't immediately comment.
