CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - Eddy County Sheriff Ernie Mendoza says the public is still not following warnings about rabid or possible rabid skunks inside and outside the city limits of Carlsbad.
The Carlsbad Current reported a 20-year-old Eddy County man killed and skinned a skunk without using protective gloves Monday. Now, he's waiting to hear if he will have to undergo a series of painful rabies shots, if the state's epidemiologist determines the skunk has rabies.
The skunk's head was sent off to the epidemiologist on Tuesday and the county is waiting for the testing results.
Residents are advised to stay away from a skunk if it is acting abnormal or not. Also, don't leave dog food out after dark and take other precautions such as getting a pet vaccinated for rabies.
