"I can see the intersection from my office window. I look at the window each day and I see the chaos," Concerned Resident, Lana Stab, said.
Lana Stab sees all the accidents that happen at the intersection of Business 20 and Highway 137. Now she is trying to do something about it.
"I put together this petition to help my friends and neighbors who might be affected by this intersection," Stab said.
Stab wants the Texas Department of Transportation to put a stop light and help control the traffic.
"People don't really seem to know who is supposed to go and who isn't supposed to go. I'd like to have a stop light that clearly defines the right of way," Stab said.
"It's been a problematic intersection for us," Martin County Sheriff, John Woodward, said.
Woodward says this intersection has always been trouble and now with the major increase in traffic, it's only getting worse, especially for the big trucks.
One of the problems is the large trucks have to come up, stop at the railroad crossing, once they make sure it clear, they then go a few feet and stop legally at the stop sign before they take off.
"One problem we've seen is some of the lower vehicles and trailers, they have a tendency to hang up coming over the tracks because of the clearance problem," Woodward said.
Just this past weekend, a train collided with a semi truck. This year alone, there have already been four accidents at the intersection. But before the petition started rolling around town, the County Judge had already talked to TXDOT about the problem.
"I already had the engineer for TXDOT in Odessa said he look into it," County Judge, Corky Blocker, said.
So far, Stab has over 200 signatures and only expects to get more. Ultimately she hopes something is done about the dangerous intersection.
"They say that before you can get a stop light, you have to have X amount of fatalities at the intersection. I like to see the stop light prevent that before any of my friends and neighbors are killed," Stab said.
NewsWest 9 spoke to TXDOT and they said they have not seen the petition yet, but if they get enough public requests then they will have to do a study on the intersection.
